Government policy is that there should be three rail freight terminals in the south east while the South East Plan, produced by the South East Regional Assembly (SEERA), identifies the need for one of these, such as KRAFT, to be located between the Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone and London.

At the same time, the Government is committed to reducing the amount of freight carried on our roads by moving it onto rail and waterways. Transferring freight from road to rail at a terminal such as this would see the number of lorry journeys on roads in Kent, the South East and beyond reduce by tens of thousands a year.

An interchange terminal in this part of Kent would also provide a crucial rail freight link between the UK and our trading partners in mainland Europe

The proposed KRAFT site is currently used for mineral extraction and infill. By giving careful consideration to site levels and contouring of the site, it would be possible to lessen the impact of the development on the surrounding area and communities.

The site is close to the M20/M26 interchange, linking to the M2, M25 and wider motorway network, while the Channel Tunnel designated freight railway line runs through Borough Green.
